OUR STORY

All across the country, communities of color and/or low-income are burdened by toxic, polluting facilities, gentrification, community blight and social justice issues. The Chocolate City Freedom Ride, hosted by the Environmental Justice Climate Change Initiative is an opportunity to learn about some of the Environmental Justice issues facing the Nation's Capitol. The tour will cover all four quadrants of Washington, DC and highlight the rich history of Washington, DC and the  work of various community and non-profit organizations to restore the environment while maintaining and sustaining a community of culture.  In order to build a more sustainable and resilient Chocolate City we must see what's holding us down and fight back.

Jordan Rivers:

I'm excited to get to know the city better with cultural underpinning contexts. I want to see a stronger sense of community with a true understanding of dynamics at play here in the chocolate city.

Falon Shackelford has been working with identifying points of intrest for the tour, working with local Black businesses to help serve as allies to event, and working on compiling various information for the tour about the history of each stop, with hopes that the tour will empower residents, predominately Black residents of the city, to learn about the environmental risks and rich history of their city.

Sheika Reid is a Chocolate City native who has been working with identifying potent areas that have been affected by both environmental and economic injustices. Through this tour she aims to inform and empower people about the disparities in their communities, and ways they can better them. This tour is a beautiful opportunity for people to see the D.C. that is not on most travel tours.
